Why does the same token have a different contract address on each chain

A token's contract address is unique to the blockchain it was deployed on. The same token exists as separate, independent smart contracts on each chain, and each contract gets its own address when it is created.

Think of blockchains as separate cities. A token like USDC is like a coffee chain that opens a distinct store in each city. Each store has its own street address, its own lease, and its own local inventory. The brand is the same, but the location is different. On Ethereum, USDC lives at one address. On Solana, it lives at a completely different address. On Polygon, another. These are not copies of one another. They are separate contracts, each governed by the rules of its own blockchain.

The reason is structural. Blockchains do not share a common database or file system. There is no global token registry that all chains read from. When a project wants its token to exist on multiple chains, it must deploy a new smart contract on each one. The deployment transaction creates a new contract address, which is derived from the deployer's address and a nonce (a counter that prevents two contracts from having the same address on the same chain). Because the deployer's address and nonce differ per chain, the resulting contract address differs too.

A practical consequence: you cannot simply send a token from one chain to another by using the same address. The receiving chain does not recognise the sender chain's contract. If you send Ethereum-based USDC to a Solana USDC address, the transaction will fail or, worse, the tokens may be lost. This is why cross-chain swaps require a mechanism that locks or burns tokens on the source chain and mints or releases an equivalent amount on the destination chain. There is also a subtle point: even tokens that share the same name and ticker may not be equivalent across chains. Bridge operators or protocol teams decide which contract address represents a given token on a given chain. Occasionally, two different projects deploy tokens with the same name on the same chain, each with its own address. Always verify the contract address against a trusted source. The name alone is not enough.

In summary, a token's contract address is a property of the specific blockchain where the contract was deployed. The same logical token has many addresses because it inhabits many separate blockchains. That is not a flaw. It is how blockchains work.
